Houston ISD Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps
The United States Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) came into being with the passage of the National Defense Act of 1916. The JROTC was established in the Houston Independent School District in 1926. The JROTC Program has changed greatly over the years. Once looked upon primarily as a source of enlisted recruits and officer candidates, it became a citizenship program devoted to the moral, physical and educational uplift of American youth. Each of Houston Independent School District’s 25 comprehensive high schools has an active JROTC program.
There are 21 Army, 3 Navy JROTC, and 1 Air Force JROTC programs with a total JROTC enrollment of 4,500 students for school year 2012-2013. The JROTC core curriculum prepares young men and women to be better citizens and leaders in their post secondary education or in the work place. Houston Independent School District JROTC instructors encourage cadets to pursue a college education as the option of first choice. Of the students remaining in JROTC for four years, over 85% attend college; 10% enter the workforce; and 5% enlist in the Armed Forces.
